28 Important & Basic Safety Rules For Kids You Shouldn’t Miss

As parents, one of your major worries would naturally be the safety of your child. Right?
You’re constantly thinking of ways to keep them as safe as possible.
When they’re out in school or at a friend’s house, you cannot help but wonder if your child is equipped with the understanding and maturity to handle an adverse, dangerous situation, if it arises.
So how do you ensure your child is prepared?
Well, there are various safety rules that a parent should make sure their child has in mind. These rules need to be reiterated constantly to make sure that your child is well aware of them.
Like many other parents, we’re sure that you have a certain amount of confusion and apprehension about what rules are most important and where exactly to start with explaining these rules to your child.
You’re probably also wondering what areas you should emphasize and how to sensitively approach the subject of safety rules for kids.
This is why we have compiled a list that you can use to keep them informed about the different steps they need to take in order to be safe and sound. Let’s take a look!

28 Important Safety Rules For Kids:

1. Road Safety Rules For Kids

A) Look before crossing

Make sure that you’re telling your child repeatedly to never cross any street or road without holding the hand of an adult or an elder sibling. Tell them to make sure they look left, right, and then left again before crossing.

B) Don’t play or run around on the road

While speaking of traffic rules for kids, it is vital that you tell your child to never play on a street or a road where vehicles would pass by.

C) Walk only on the sidewalk

It’s important to tell your child to walk on the sidewalk or footpath of the road and not on the road itself. If there’s no sidewalk, make sure your child knows to walk facing the traffic and on the complete edge of the road.

D) Basic road signs and traffic signals

With regard to traffic safety rules, teach your child what red, yellow, and green mean in a traffic light. It’s also important to teach your child the signals at a zebra crossing (the walking sign being green or red). Make sure that you also teach them what some common and basic road signs mean.

E) Careful while getting out

Make sure you emphasize this as it is one of the most important safety rules for kids! Your child should only exit a car or vehicle away from the traffic side, towards the footpath. And, you must teach your child to look through the window both towards the front and behind before opening a car door, so they don’t injure any passerby while doing so.

F) Helmet and protective gear

If your child is old enough to ride a bicycle or skateboard, make sure you tell them how important it is to wear their helmet and any other protective gear while doing so and to never go too fast.
A few other important things to keep in mind when we’re talking about road safety rules for kids are:

  • Teach your child the importance of wearing a seatbelt
  • Never to move or stand in a moving vehicle like a van or a bus, Never to stick their hands outside a moving vehicle
  • Always have an alert ear to listen for horns while walking or cycling on roads so they can slowly stop at the side of the road and let them pass

2. ‘At Home’ Safety Rules For Kids

A) Emergency contact list

With regard to safety at home, your child should know the list of emergency contacts created by you. This list should be kept close to the telephone. Your child should also know the mobile number of both parents by heart. Make sure you keep making them practice saying your mobile number out loud until they learn it.

B) Get permission before leaving the house

Your kid should know to never leave the house premises, even if they’re only going downstairs to play with their friends, without asking for your permission.

C) Avoid opening the door for strangers

If your child happens to be home alone, and someone they don’t recognize rings the doorbell, they should always ask who they are and what they want before opening the door. If it’s someone unexpected or someone that you have not told them will be coming, they shouldn’t open the door and should ask them to come back later. Then, they should immediately call you to inform you.

D) Never play with fire or water

Your children should be extremely careful on slippery surfaces in the washroom. Additionally, they should never play with matches or the gas stove. Playing with fire is a big no-no and fire safety rules must be established well.
Additionally, make your child aware of the importance of keeping any water away from electronics or electric outlet plug points, as this could lead to getting a shock or even a fire.

E) Never climb on high surfaces

While it may be tempting for your child to jump on beds or couches, especially if they’re left alone, this is extremely unsafe for them and could cause accidents, and so it should not be allowed. They should also never climb on anything high such as shelves.

F) Safe at-home learning

3. Safety Rules For Kids About Strangers

A) Careful with strangers

It’s important to constantly reiterate and make your child aware that if someone tells them they were sent by you to pick them up or offers them candy, they should completely ignore them and talk to any nearby adult they can find and report them. This is a really important point, especially when we’re talking about safety rules at school. Teach your child that while stranger danger is real, not all strangers are a danger because when one stranger is trying to lure them, they can always approach another stranger for help!
And, constantly reiterate that even if the stranger seems friendly and nice, they should never accept from them under any circumstances, and neither should they let a stranger touch them anywhere.
If someone is trying to make them go somewhere, ask them to yell out loud.

B) Consult before talking to strangers

While talking about child safety, it’s important that you tell your child repeatedly that they don’t have to keep any secrets from you that other kids or adults have asked them to keep (other than surprises, of course)! Most predators will ask your child to keep secrets and that’s their biggest weapon.
If they are used to telling you everything, they would automatically tell you if a new adult tries to talk to them.

C) Be wary of adults asking for help

This is another important rule that helps ensure safety at school for your child. Teach your child to keep their distance from adult strangers that are talking to them and to stay on guard.

4. Health And Hygiene Safety Rules For Kids

A) Wash hands and stay clean
Keep reinforcing that your child must wash hands before and after every meal, after playing, if they come into contact with something dirty, and should additionally avoid touching their face or mouth with their hands, altogether. Make sure they follow hygiene habits like brushing their teeth twice a day, showering twice a day if they’ve gone to school or to play, shampooing their hair often, combing their hair neatly, keeping their nails short and clean, etc.

B) Follow a healthy diet and sleep pattern

Two of the main practices for your child to adopt in order to stay healthy and away from illness are sleeping and eating well. Make sure they’re getting enough sleep every night and that you inform them of the benefits of eating a healthy, balanced diet while emphasizing the harmful effects of not following these things.

5. COVID-19 Safety rules

It is very important to discuss the importance of safety measures that a child must take at all times during COVID

A) Wear a mask when leaving the house

Always make sure that your child doesn’t leave the house without wearing the mask. The mask is very important to make sure that the virus doesnt spread to them.

B) Carry a sanitizer wherever you go

As mentioned before, washing your hands is very important for your child. Additionally, make sure that the child always carries sanitizer with them and uses it frequently to make sure their hands are clean and germ-free.

C) Maintain 6 feet of distance in the public

Ideally children should not leave the house unless absolutely necessary, but if they are going out for play or school, make sure they are aware of the 6-feet distance rule! Encourage your child to always maintain a 6-feet distance between themselves and their peers.

6. General Safety Rules For Kids

A) What to do in case they are lost

If a situation were to arise in which they got lost in a supermarket, mall, or a fair, instruct your kid in advance to avoid panicking, stay where they are, and approach an adult for help.

B) Know your complete contact information

Your child should know the full name of both parents, your address, mobile numbers, and home telephone number by heart. They should be able to give out these details in the case of an emergency such as them getting lost.

C) Good touch vs. bad touch

An extremely important safety rule for kids is to help them be aware of child predators. All children should be made aware of good touch and bad touch – both boys as well as girls. Teach them that the areas of the body that a swimsuit would cover cannot be touched by anyone else. Tell them to be very protective of their body. Keep teaching them the difference between good touch and bad touch, and let them know that if anybody – be it an adult or a kid – touches these areas of the body, they have to immediately report it to you.
No games involving the showing or touching of these parts should ever be allowed and you must make that clear to them.

D) Internet safety

In this digital age, reiterating internet safety rules for kids is of utmost importance. Teach them to never disclose their school’s name, their house address, their passwords, or any personal information on the internet. Tell them to never talk to a stranger online and to report to you if a stranger messages them on any online platform.

E) Safety around water bodies

Make it clear that a child is never to go swimming without your permission. An adult absolutely has to accompany children when they’re swimming at all times. Even while going to the beach or near any other water body, teach them to be extremely careful. When they are standing in the water at the beach, they must stay in a very shallow area and must hold the hand of an adult.

F) Safety from the Sun’s UV exposure

In the long term, frequent exposure to the Sun’s UV rays without sunscreen could lead to complications. Teach them from a young age to wear sunscreen, or cover up with clothes on hot, sunny days.

Conclusion

The above list of safety rules is to give you some examples of the ideas of safety that you should be reinforced in your child from a young age.
The most important thing is to keep having open conversations with them and talk to them like they’re a good friend of yours, rather than taking an authoritarian approach. This will help your child confide in you about anything that they find problematic.
We hope that you found this list of safety rules helpful and we hope that it can be of use when it comes to explaining it to your child.
